Dia de la Cruz ( the day of the Cross) is celebrated every May 3rd in Cómpeta. The cross which is made of real flower heads is constructed by local women folk and not completed until the last moment, to keep everything as fresh as possible. The completed task is announced by the band and carried out to applause.

The procession leaves the Plaza del Carmen, preceded by the local "rocket man" who seems to ignite a rocket every 50 yds. to the delight of the niños. The cross leads the way followed by the band, village folk and vaqueros on horseback and winds its way up the mountain road to a shrine, where after a small ceremony the Cross is placed.
