Noche de las lumbres is quite a
recent fiesta now held annually in the Plaza del
Carmen on 7th September. It celebrates the "night
of the fires", the first night that fires are
once again allowed to be lit in the campo, following
after the summer moratorium.
It is a great evening and like all
good fiestas, continues into the early hours
As
the professional entertainment comes to a close and
the fire dies down, some of our more senior residents
show how, in days gone by, they used to get together
for a song and make music from anything that came to
hand, spoons, castanet's, empty bottles. (in this case
an empty anis bottle, traditionally drunk on this
evening) The most interesting sound and the key
instrument is called a "Zambomba". (arrowed).
It makes
a noise akin to an aboriginal sound. It is basically
an upturned flowerpot with a drum skin stretched over
the other end.
This
has a hole in it, where a small round stick is wetted
and the musician makes the sound using their
forefingers Sounds easy but I am assured it is not!
