Canillas
de Albaida - (the
closest of the white villages to Cómpeta and within
walking distance), if you want peace & quiet,
just sit in the main square, there is very nice
restaurant where you can have a meal or just a
drink and soak up the silence. The Church, which is
also in the square is beautiful inside.

Torrox
- It is
said that Torrox has the best climate in Europe, It
comprises of two parts, Torrox Pueblo & Torrox
Costa, which are approximately 1-2 kms apart, although
with the extension to the Pueblo, by way of "Torrox
Park", an ever growing urbanization, the two
parts are getting closer all the time.

Frigiliana
- App 30-45 mins by car
from Cómpeta (the last bastion of the
Moors), situated just north of Nerja, it is probably
one of the best known of the white villages, and
steeped in history.. Although on the tourist map, it
is still well and truly Spanish. To wander through
the cobbled streets is a delight. Potted
History
*
for those who wish to know more about the more
recent history of the town in, particular the immediate
aftermath of the civil war. I implore you to rear
"Between Two Fires" by David Baird. I can
assure you that you will see Frigiliana in a
completely different light and make you want to
explore the area more* Recommended

Nerja
- App 30-mins by car
from Cómpeta . Not so long ago, and
within the memory of some, this was a small fishing
village, but now it is a bustling town and although
many foreigners have settled here, and during the
summer months is a magnet for tourists, it still
retains it's Spanish heritage. To walk along the
Balcon de Europa, or sit outside one of the many
cafeterias, sipping a drink and maybe just people
watch, is a joy, There is also a beautiful Church in
the main square, adjacent to the Balcon. There are
ample shops and yet more cafeterias &
restaurants (catering for every taste) just off the
main square, whichever way you go. There is
also a very large Spanish market in the town on
Tuesday mornings. One of the must do outings is the
Cuevas de Nerja (Nerja caves) Discovered by a couple
of children playing , it is an absolutely amazing
place

Calleta - App
30-40 mins by car from Cómpeta. A delightful
working fishing village & marina situated between
Allgarobo costa & Torre del Mar . There is a lovely
promenade,
many restaurants and a bustling market on Saturday
mornings. In July, as in the other fishing ports along
this coast, the celebration of the "Virgen
del Carmen" takes place.

Málaga
- App
1 1/4
hrs by car from Cómpeta. A beautiful and
friendly city, it is a major port and is on the
itinerary of many of the large cruise ships, quite
often you will see one or more in the harbour. You
can also catch a ferry to Morocco from here. The old
part of the city, in the vicinity of the Cathedral
is well worth a visit, above and looking down, is
"La Alcazba" (the old Moorish fort built
between the 8th &11th centuries) above &
behind that is the ruins of the Castillo Gilbrafaro,
from where there is a vista of the whole City. Further
along from the old town you will find the C/
Marquis de Larios, which leads to the main plaza,
Pza de la Constitución. The street has been
turned into a beautiful paseo and is lovely to walk
along either during the day or evening. You will
find an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafes.

Playa
del Palo - App
1 hr by car from Cómpeta (Adjacent to Málaga
on the east side & well sign posted). A
beautiful fishing village, with man made coves and
lovely beaches, copious amounts of lovely fish
restaurants abound.
Granada
- App 2 - 21/2
hrs by car from Cómpeta. The city
itself is well worth a visit, but the two main
attractions in the area have to be the Alhambra
Palace and the Sierra Nevada ski resort. Both are a
must see. The drive from Motril (on the coast) to
Granada has some stunning and dramatic scenery
and takes approximately 11/2
to 2 hours. Both places are well sign posted
on the outskirts and easy to find.

I would recommend
getting tickets for the Alhambra in advance to avoid
disappointment and /or a long (very) long queue!
Market days
listed above are always in the mornings, finishing
at about 2pm. The main ones are listed but all the
villages have one during the week. The markets are
on all year round and although all of them are used
by the
Spanish, the coastal markets prices sometimes
reflect the fact that tourists are visiting.
* The markets at
Velez - Málaga (the larger of the two) & Cómpeta
are truly Spanish and therefore a lot cheaper
(at the moment!)
