There are many shrines in Spain, particularly in the villages, ranging from a small alcove in a window to a large stand alone shrine at the side of the road or in a park. Many people keep them maintained and put out fresh flowers, lighted candles etc, some are visited everyday. In Cómpeta there are two in particular, one is a fertility shrine and one is a shrine to a local revered figure, but there are many others.
It is very unusual to see any shrine suffering vandalism as in the one above. The location is believed to mark the spot where a person was executed during the civil war, the reason for the vandalism can only be guessed at. Recently (2009) a new statuette has been left in the alcove and the glass replaced but unfortunately further damage has occured indicating that feelings are still raw, even after all this time. Perhaps one day the whole structure will be renovated *Pleased to report the shrine has now been renovated*
The shrine in Plaza del Carmen. The lady who tends this shrine lives adjacent and is also called Carmen.
As you see, the shrines are many and varied. This being only a small selection
